The Long Trails Series comprises a sequence of historical fiction sagas with elements of romantic suspense—and an equestrian twist. It follows my characters from the wilderness of Utah Territory and Russia to the San Francisco Bay Area then on to Colonial New Zealand. The novels, rich in historical detail, follow the adventures of Aleksandra, Xavier, Tatiana, and a few secret others as they travel through the 1860’s.
The series begins with A Long Trail Rolling and is followed by The Hills of Gold Unchanging. Against the backdrop of the Pony Express, the Virginia City Comstock Lode, the California Empire Mine and the Malakoff Diggins, these historical fictions accompany our heroes from the 1860’s Utah desert to the historic Old San Francisco Bay Area.
In Book Three, A Sea of Green Unfolding, Aleksandra and Xavier reside at Xavier’s family hacienda, Rancho de las Pulgas, near my real-life home town of La Honda, CA. After tragedy strikes, they become disillusioned enough with America and its abuse of the American Indians to leave Xavier’s birthright. They journey to 1863 colonial New Zealand, where Xavier’s longtime friend had told him “everyone lives together in harmony.” They land and discover, to their horror, that it’s far from the truth, as they find themselves in the middle of the bloody New Zealand Waikato Wars.
Tatiana is the upcoming Book Four. Stableman’s daughter Tatiana rises to glamorous heights by her equestrienne abilities—but the tsar’s glittering attention is not always gold. She and her husband Vladimir become pawns in the emperor’s pursuit of a coveted secret weapon. While Tatiana is placed under house arrest, Vladimir must recover it, or risk losing his wife and young son. To return without means exile in Siberia, for all of them. With the odds mounting against them, can they find each other again—half a world away?
Research is in progress for a fifth novel, wherein my characters endeavour to survive as war continues to wrack the young nation.
